A Bit About My Journey Through Peri-Menopause

Hi, I’m Anne, and my peri-menopause journey started as I approached my early 40’s.  Life was a whirlwind of running a farm, working full time, raising a family, and like so many women I poured all my energy into supporting those around me, often placing my own needs and self-care at the bottom of the priority list.

Then, seemingly out of nowhere, my body began to change in ways I couldn’t quite understand. It started with irregular periods, followed by intense hot flashes that would strike without warning, leaving me flushed, uncomfortable, and sometimes embarrassed. Nights that were once peaceful became sleepless battles with night sweats that left me drained and fatigued.

Emotionally, I was on an unpredictable roller coaster. Moments of calm were quickly replaced by irritability, unexpected tears, or even rage over the smallest things. I felt disconnected from the person I used to be.

But it was the brain fog that truly shook me. Forgetting appointments, names, and even why I had walked into a room left me questioning my cognitive health. At one point, I genuinely feared I might be facing early-onset dementia. Worse still, I didn’t know how to articulate what I was going through. It was affecting my work, my relationships, and I felt isolated, as though I was navigating this journey entirely alone.

At my lowest point, after tirelessly searching for answers, I discovered a holistic practitioner who integrated multiple modalities, with a focus on Counselling and Natural Medicine. It was like a lifeline and for the first time, I felt a sense of hope. With her guidance, I began to unravel the complexities of my symptoms and discovered I was in the throes of peri-menopause. You have to remember this was a time when menopause wasn’t openly discussed, and with little to no education on the subject, it was little wonder so many women felt lost and unsupported during this transition.

Together we identified the root causes of my struggles—hormonal imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, and stress —and crafted a personalised plan that included dietary changes, lifestyle adjustments, herbs, and supplements. What I didn’t anticipate was how much unresolved emotional turmoil and repressed trauma would rise to the surface during this recalibration. Incorporating counselling into the treatment plan was a game changer. It provided me with a safe and compassionate, non-judgmental space to unpack and deconstruct my emotions, make sense of and resolve my feelings, and find lasting healing. The emotional support was as transformative as the physical care.

Through this holistic approach, I began to feel like myself again, renewed. My hormone levels stabilised, my energy returned, and the emotional fog that had clouded my mind began to lift. The newfound freedom that came from understanding and embracing this transition was life-changing. Having someone who truly understood what I was going through made all the difference.

This journey became one of profound self-discovery and growth. It allowed me to reconnect with who I am, rebuild and move forward from a place of self-awareness, and rediscover a sense of balance and empowerment I hadn’t felt in years.

 It’s a transformation I now dedicate myself to helping other women experience. Please know, you don’t have to walk this journey alone.

These sessions are exactly the same as face-to-face consultations, with the added convenience of you choosing the quiet and comfortable location that suits you.

All you need is a quiet spot, a device such as your phone, computer or tablet and an internet connection.

NUTRITION

Optimising Health

My belief, along with scientific evidence, is that true well-being involves both mental and physical health. The importance of diet and nutrition to enhancing mental health and wellbeing cannot be underestimated.

For this reason integrating nutrition into our therapeutic counselling sessions is crucial to achieving balanced hormones, mood regulation and brain health. By providing the essential building blocks for nourishing the whole person you foster lasting well-being and vitality.

A Balanced Diet Improves Mental Health

A balanced diet, rich in essential nutrients, is fundamental for optimal overall functioning. For example:

  • omega-3 fatty acids from fish are linked to a reduced risk of depression,

  • and B vitamins, found in both animal and plant proteins, are vital for neurotransmitter production and mood regulation.
